HOMEWORK

• Study for Fahrenheit 451 test Tuesday!
• Write about the symbols we listed in class. Are there more in the later reading? Find a quote or two to illustrate them.
• Think about a "Creative Test." This is not due until Friday, November 21. These are mainly choices that YOU suggested today (good ones!), with a couple of additions at the end by me:
  • You may choose one of the following characters and write about him/her, using one or more of the suggested questions or topics. REMEMBER TO WRITE ABOUT HIM/HER IN THE FIRST PERSON!

      • You might want to handle it this way (although you don't have to, at all!): Imagine that you are Beatty. Let us see the real Beatty in an “interior monologue.” Are you split between your role as the chief fireman and your love of the philosophy and pleasure of books, or have you even decided which side you are on? What determines your actions with Montag—from programming the Mechanical Hound to inciting him to burn you (if that’s what you did!)?

      • You might want to handle it this way (although you don't have to, at all!):                Write your thoughts as you turn on the parlor “walls”, watch awhile, then turn them off, eventually swallowing pills and going to bed in the room where eventually Montag enters. Discuss your friends and your husband. What happens to you at the end of the novel? What do you feel?

        Imagine that you are Clarisse. Take us into your family and show us what your home life is like. How did your family escape the fate of that society and remain engaged with nature and books? What are your thoughts about the rest of this society? Tell us, from your point of view, why you talked to Montag; what did you see in him? Why did you disappear?

  • You may rewrite the ending and have it happen quite differently.
  • You may write a short story about a utopia/dystopia of your own invention.

• A little discussion of Fahrenheit 451 (much more to follow later in the week)
• Politics and the "straw vote." As a class we reversed our previous vote of McCAIN 13, OBAMA 10 to OBAMA 10, McCAIN 8, NADER 2 and CHUCK BALDWIN 2. Go figure!
• On Wednesday we will find out how closely our class reflected the national vote. Let's see...would that be 55% Obama 45% McCain?
