LET'S THINK ABOUT GREAT EXPECTATIONS IN A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT WAYS, NOW THAT WE HAVE FINISHED THE NOVEL. Please write about the following and print out a copy to turn in TODAY.
1. THE DIFFERENCES IN THE ORIGINAL ENDING AND THE SECOND ENDING!
YOU MUST WORK INDIVIDUALLY ON THIS PART
- Which ending do you LIKE better? Explain your reasons.
- Which ending is more EFFECTIVE? Examine them both carefully, without letting your personal preference TOTALLY influence your assessment. It is perfectly fine to choose either ending as being most effective, but please explain thoroughly the reasons for your choice. Do they both fit the general plot and tone of the book?
2. You will look at GREAT EXPECTATIONS as a Bildungsroman! A Bildungsroman is a "growing-up" novel, remember?
YOU MAY WORK IN PARTNERS ON THIS PART. (PAIRS ONLY, NO MORE THAN TWO!)
- First go to http://www.victorianweb.org/genre/hader1.html and read about the Bildungsroman. This will refresh and expand what you already know.
- If you like, you may click on the Great Expectations link on the webpage above and see what they have to say about this novel as Bildungsroman. This may give you some ideas. Remember that if you use any ideas or quotes from this website, you need to cite them properly!
- Now, TRACK PIP THROUGH THIS JOURNEY. You may even use the Hero's Journey if you like. Note the changes in his age, outlook, finances, happiness, maturity, education, love, etc., etc.
- What did Pip eventually realize was of value in his life?
- ***I WANT TO SEE VERY DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF THIS PROJECT, PLEASE. NO COLLABORATION BETWEEN GROUPS, JUST BETWEEN PARTNERS.
